IF BOTH COULD BE

If Both Could Be

short documentary | runtime: 39 minutes

Faced with a decision about their future in a non-LGBTQ+ affirming church, a young queer Welsh theologian seeks clarity around their calling to Christian ministry.

content warning: This film, though overall gentle and reflective in tone, deals with heavy topics including religious and family trauma and homophobia/transphobia. Please take care of yourself. <3

a note from the filmmaker

A few years ago, on a trip to visit a friend in Manchester, England, I met a gentle and light-filled soul named Huw. We connected over similar questions and tensions around faith and belonging that were floating around in both of our hearts. I was moved by the way Huw articulated their complex relationship with the Church of the Nazarene, an institution with a doctrine in direct conflict with their identity.

We stayed in touch over the following months and when I returned to the UK the next year, Huw generously allowed me to follow them around, capturing a bit of their journey as they navigated their future in ministry.

Making this film has been a deeply meaningful and healing act for me and I hope it is a place where you too can bring your grief, your gratitude, your anger, and your hope. Honored and excited to share it with you.
